Imagine your logo in metallic teal, a sunset that glows like polished metal, or a trading card that flashes rainbow when it catches the light. That’s Akuafoil. A silver foil goes down first, exactly where you want shine, and then full-color CMYK prints on top. Every color you print over the foil becomes a metallic version of itself. So you’re not limited to gold and silver: you get full color metallic foil in any shade, multi-color foil and metallic gradients in one design, right next to regular full-color printing.

It’s a finish that lets designers’ creativity run all the way. With a little design help, Akuafoil can even create a holographic-style, rainbow foil effect, the look collectors love on rare cards.

How Akuafoil Printing Works

  1. Silver foil base: a specialized silver foil is applied only to the areas marked in your foil mask file.
  2. Full-color overprint: standard CMYK ink prints over the whole design, including on top of the foil.
  3. Metallic color: wherever ink sits on foil, the color turns metallic. Blue becomes metallic blue, a gradient becomes a metallic gradient, and areas with no foil print as regular full color.

That’s why Akuafoil is also called full color foil, CMYK foil, multi-color foil, inline foil and metallic foil printing (and sometimes spelled Aquafoil). Akuafoil cards, tags and folders print on premium 16 pt C2S cardstock (bottle neck tags also come in 18 pt C1S), and stickers use 70 lb gloss sticker paper.

Light in motion: foil areas reflect light differently from the non-foil areas around them. As a card, invitation or tag moves, the light sweeps across the Akuafoil areas while the regular full-color areas stay steady. That contrast creates depth, so non-foil art seems to float in front of a glowing metallic background, giving a 3D effect.

Color tip: lighter CMYK colors let the metallic shimmer show through vividly, while heavy, dark colors mute the reflection.

Gradient Color Foils: Akuafoil’s Signature

This is where Akuafoil really stands apart. Because the color comes from ink printed over the foil, a metallic can change shade smoothly: light teal fading to deep teal, gold melting into copper, pink blending into purple, or a full rainbow. Single-color foil stamping applies one solid foil, so it can’t create a gradient of a color. With Akuafoil, every shade in between turns metallic.

  • Single-color gradients: one brand color from light to dark, for a polished, dimensional metallic logo or headline.
  • Color-to-color blends: sunset oranges into magenta, ocean blues into green, rose gold into champagne.
  • Rainbow gradients: the holographic-style look for collectibles and party designs.
  • Shading and halftones: shadows and highlights in photos and illustrations stay metallic, so artwork looks rich and three-dimensional.

Tip: keep gradients in light to mid tones over foil for the brightest shine; very dark ends of a gradient will look more muted.

Akuafoil vs. Foil Stamping: Which One?

Both are metallic, and each has its own strengths.

Holographic-Style and Rainbow Foil Effects

Because Akuafoil takes on whatever colors you print over it, a rainbow gradient on top of the foil becomes a rainbow metallic, the holographic-style look collectors call “holo.” Our designers work with you to create it: full-card holo backgrounds, rainbow borders, holo frames around a character, or just a holo rarity symbol.

  • Full-card holo: foil across the whole card, with a soft rainbow gradient on top.
  • Holo background, regular character: foil behind the art only, so the character pops forward with a 3D, depth-like feel.
  • Rainbow border or frame: a holo edge that marks a card or invitation as special.
  • Holo accents: logos, rarity stars, stat bars or a monogram in rainbow metallic.

Good to know: Akuafoil creates a holographic-style effect with printed color over mirror-like silver. If you want a true holographic foil, whose colors shift as you tilt it, look for Raised Holographic Foil, a foil option on our raised foil products.

Quick Tips

  • Leave some areas without foil. Shine stands out most next to non-metallic areas.
  • Keep text in foil bold: sans serif, about 12 pt or larger. Avoid delicate, cursive or very small text in foil areas.
  • For a plain silver look, keep at least 15% K (black) in that area of your artwork.
  • Keep QR codes and fine print off the foil for crisp, easy-to-read results.
  • Pastel palettes come out especially beautiful on Akuafoil.

Akuafoil File Setup

Every file for a side must be the same size and line up exactly:

  1. Your full-color (CMYK) artwork: the design exactly as you want it printed, with bleed. Print-ready PDF works best; JPG, PNG and other image formats are accepted too.
  2. Your Akuafoil mask, in vector format (PDF, AI or EPS): every area that should be metallic is solid 100% black (K), and everything else is white.
  3. Your Spot UV mask, in vector format, only if you’re adding Spot UV: areas that get Spot UV are solid 100% K, and everything else is white.
Your designFiles per sidePrinting and finishing on both sides

Full color + Akuafoil + Spot UV3: CMYK artwork + Akuafoil mask + Spot UV mask6

If a side has only full color, or full color and just one finish, send just the files that side needs.

  • Black in a mask gets the finish; white gets none. Gray tints aren’t read, so use solid black only.
  • Name files clearly by side and layer, for example Card-Front-CMYK.pdf, Card-Front-Akuafoil-Mask.pdf and Card-Front-SpotUV-Mask.pdf.

No mask files? No problem. Our designers can create your Akuafoil and Spot UV masks for you, or design your whole piece. Every order includes a free proof, and our prepress team checks mask alignment before printing. See our Akuafoil FAQs for more detail.

Akuafoil Printing FAQs

What is Akuafoil printing?

Akuafoil is a full color foil process. A silver foil base is applied to chosen areas, then standard CMYK ink prints on top, so every color over the foil becomes metallic. It's also known as full color foil, CMYK foil, multi-color foil, inline foil and Aquafoil.

How is Akuafoil different from foil stamping?

Foil stamping heat-stamps a solid foil strip for a pure, mirror-bright, single-color metallic, ideal for classic gold or silver. Akuafoil prints full color over a silver foil base, so you get any metallic color, several colors at once, and gradients and shading that single-color foil stamping can't achieve.

Can Akuafoil print gradient foil?

Yes, and it's one of Akuafoil's biggest strengths. A color can shift smoothly from light to dark, or from one color to another, and stay metallic throughout. Single-color foil stamping can't create gradients.

Can Akuafoil create a holographic effect?

Yes, a holographic-style one. Printing a rainbow gradient over the foil gives a rainbow metallic look, and our designers can help you create it. For a true holographic foil that shifts color as you tilt it, choose Raised Holographic Foil on our raised foil products.

Which colors look best with Akuafoil?

Lighter colors and pastels let the metallic shine show vividly. Heavy, dark colors mute the reflection, so use them for non-foil areas or small details.

What files do I need for Akuafoil?

For each side: your full-color CMYK artwork and an Akuafoil mask in vector format, where metallic areas are 100% black and everything else is white. Adding Spot UV? Add a third file, a Spot UV mask in vector format. Two-sided designs need these files for each side. Our designers can make the mask for you.

Can I combine Akuafoil with Spot UV or UV coating?

Yes. UV coating is on the calculator for most products, and Spot UV is available on several products' calculators or by custom quote on the others. For Akuafoil plus Spot UV, send 3 files per side: full-color CMYK artwork, an Akuafoil mask and a Spot UV mask, with both masks in vector format.

Can I get rounded corners on Akuafoil products?

Yes, on Akuafoil business cards, postcards and trading cards.

What can I print with Akuafoil?

Trading cards, business cards, postcards, invitations, flat and folded greeting cards, stickers, hang tags, bottle neck tags, rack cards, bookmarks and presentation folders.

What's the minimum order for Akuafoil?

500 on most Akuafoil products and 250 for bottle neck hang tags. You can print as many designs as you need: designs are grouped in sets of up to 15 to pass on group shipping savings, and you can add more groups. For larger quantities, contact us for a custom quote.

Should I choose Akuafoil or Pearl?

Both look great. Akuafoil gives multi-color metallic accents exactly where you want them, mixed with full-color printing. Pearl makes the whole sheet shimmer so every color shows through softly, with minimums as low as 25.

Can I get custom sizes or shrink wrapped bundles?

Yes. Custom sizes are available by custom quote. Shrink wrapping in bundles is available by custom quote; request a quote or contact us.

How long does Akuafoil printing take?

Choose 2–4 or 5–7 business days, plus shipping. Every order includes a free proof.
