The Complete Guide to White Ink (White Mask) on Kraft

Here’s what makes kraft printing special. Brown kraft is a colored, uncoated paper, and standard full-color (CMYK) inks are translucent: they sit in the paper and let the brown show through. There’s no white ink in CMYK, so anything white in your design simply shows as brown. That gives you two very different looks from the same stock, and you choose which one fits your message.

What Does a White Mask Do?

A White Mask (also called white ink or a white underbase) is a layer of opaque white ink printed on the kraft first, exactly where you want it. Your full-color artwork then prints on top of that white. The white blocks the brown underneath, so colors print the way they look on your screen: bright, clean and vibrant. Where there’s no mask, the ink soaks into the kraft and takes on its warm, rustic tone. You can apply white ink to specific areas or all over, giving you the flexibility to add contrast and brighten images exactly where your design needs it.

How Colors Look on Kraft, With and Without a White Mask

Design elementWithout a white maskWith a white mask
Black and very dark colorsCrisp and strong. Prints beautifully on its ownNot needed
Navy, deep red, forest green, dark brownRich, slightly deeper and earthierTruer to your screen, a little brighter
Bright reds, oranges, blues, greensAbsorbed into the paper: muted, warm, vintage tonesVibrant, saturated and true to your brand colors
Yellows, pastels and light colorsVery subtle, tone-on-tone; can almost disappearBright and clearly visible
White text or a white logoDoesn’t print. Shows as bare brown kraftCrisp, opaque white that pops off the brown
Photos and skin tonesDarker, sepia-like, antique feelClear, natural and full of detail

When No White Mask Is the Better Choice

Absorbed, subdued color isn’t a flaw. Sometimes it’s exactly the look your message needs. Full-color printing straight onto kraft, with no mask, gives a soft, aged, rustic finish that feels vintage, handmade and authentic, and it stands out in a world of glossy, bright print. It’s a natural fit for farm and harvest themes, heritage and “since 19XX” brands, craft beverages, vintage and antique-inspired designs, botanical illustrations, and anything that should feel warm, earthy and timeless. Designs built with dark inks and lots of open kraft space look great this way, too.

Spot White Mask: Brighten Only What Matters

You don’t have to choose all or nothing. With a spot white mask, you add white ink only under the elements that need to pop, and let everything else keep its rustic, kraft-toned look. Popular ways to use it:

  • Your logo, in true brand colors, while the rest of the design stays natural.
  • A white logo background or badge (a white circle, label shape or panel) that frames your logo on the brown.
  • White headlines, names or dates that need to be read at a glance.
  • A photo or product image printed bright and true, with a kraft border around it.
  • A QR code on a white box, so phones can scan it easily.

Three Ways to Print on Kraft

ApproachThe lookBest for
Full color, no maskWarm, muted, aged and rustic. The kraft tone shows through every colorVintage, heritage, farm, craft and earthy designs; dark inks
Spot white maskNatural kraft overall, with bright, crisp highlights where you chooseLogos, logo backgrounds, white text, photos, QR codes
All-over white maskVibrant, full-strength color, framed by the kraft edges and textureColorful, photo-heavy or brand-color-critical designs

Do I Need a White Mask?

  • Skip it if you want a warm, vintage, rustic look, or if your design uses black and dark, rich colors.
  • Use a spot mask for white text, a white logo, a logo background, a photo or brand colors that must match.
  • Use it all over if you want the whole design bright and vibrant on brown kraft.
  • Not sure? Our prepress team reviews every file and will let you know if white ink would help, before anything prints.

How to Set Up a White Mask File

  1. Create your full-color (CMYK) artwork as usual.
  2. Make a separate mask file the same size as your artwork. Color every area that should get white ink 100% black (100% K), and leave everything else white. Black means white ink; white means no ink, so the kraft shows through.
  3. Use vector shapes and save the mask as a PDF or EPS. Anything lighter than 100% K is treated as transparent and won’t get white ink.
  4. Line it up exactly with your artwork, and name your files clearly, for example Name-Front-CMYK.pdf and Name-Front-Mask.pdf.
  5. White areas in your artwork need the mask. If you don’t provide one, anything white in the design will print as bare brown kraft.

Why Brands Choose Eco-Friendly Kraft

  • Consistency: one recycled stock across cards, tags, inserts, invitations and menus makes your whole brand look intentional.
  • Credibility: a specific, checkable claim (100% recycled, 30%+ post-consumer waste) says more than “green” ever could.
  • Character: warm brown kraft stands apart from glossy white print and feels handmade.
  • Flexibility: rustic with no mask, bright with white ink, or a mix of both on the same piece.
  • Value: eco-friendly branding with a premium feel, and no specialty finishes needed.

How thick is your kraft paper?

18 pt (0.018"), thicker than standard 14 pt and premium 16 pt card stock.

What can I print on brown kraft?

What is a white mask?

White ink printed on the kraft under your design, wherever you choose. It makes colors bright and true, and it's the only way to print white on kraft.

Should I print on kraft with or without a white mask?

Without one, colors soak into the paper for a warm, muted, vintage look, which is perfect for rustic and heritage designs. With one, colors are bright and vibrant. Many designs use a spot mask under just the logo, text or photo.

How do I set up a white mask file?

Make a separate file the same size as your artwork. Color areas that get white ink 100% black (100% K), leave the rest white, and save it as a vector PDF or EPS. Anything lighter than 100% K won't get white ink.

Can you make my white mask file?

Yes. Our designers can create the mask or design your whole piece. Chat with us live, contact us, or add design service when you order.

Can I write on kraft paper?

Yes, with any ink. Ballpoint, gel, felt-tip, fountain pen, marker, pencil and stamps all work without smearing.

Do kraft invitations and greeting cards come with envelopes?

Yes, with matching blank kraft envelopes: A2, A6 or A7 depending on the card size. The 5.5" x 8.5" and 6" x 6" sizes don't come with an envelope.

Can I get coating, lamination or rounded corners on kraft?

No. Kraft is kept uncoated with square corners to preserve its natural look and writable surface.

Will the color of the kraft vary?

Slightly. Recycled, colored stock has natural character, so expect slight color variation and flecks that vary from sheet to sheet and run to run.

How long does kraft printing take?

2–4 or 5–7 business days for most kraft products, plus shipping. Every order gets a proof before printing.
