Mailing 9x12 Envelopes with USPS

USPS classifies a 9x12 envelope as a large envelope (also called a "flat"), which is priced differently from a standard letter. To qualify for large envelope rates, the mailpiece must be rectangular and flexible, uniformly thick, and no more than 3/4" thick. Pieces that are rigid, lumpy or uneven (for example, with a pen, USB drive or bulky item inside) may be charged parcel rates instead. For the best postage rates, keep contents flat and evenly distributed.

A 9x12 envelope measures 9" x 12". It's large enough to hold a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet flat, without folding, which is why it's one of the most popular large envelopes for business mail.

What is a 9x12 envelope called?

Depending on where the opening is, a 9x12 envelope is called a catalog envelope (opening on the 9" side) or a booklet envelope (opening on the 12" side). USPS classifies both as large envelopes, also called "flats".
