Why Businesses Love Printed 6x9 Envelopes

The 6x9 hits a sweet spot. It's big enough to carry a booklet or brochure without a single crease, yet small enough to feel personal, and it often mails at the regular letter rate. And since you can order as few as 25, custom envelopes are within reach for any size of mailing. A branded 6x9 also stands out in a stack of plain white #10s. When your logo is on the front and a message is on the flap, people know it's from you before they even open it.

Who Uses Custom 6x9 Envelopes?

  • Marketing teams and agencies: mini catalogs, product brochures, lookbooks and direct mail kits
  • Nonprofits and churches: donation packets, event programs, newsletters and annual appeal letters
  • Schools and universities: admissions brochures, orientation guides and award certificates
  • Healthcare and wellness practices: new patient welcome packets and care instructions
  • Real estate and mortgage professionals: listing brochures, buyer guides and closing gift cards
  • Financial advisors and insurance agents: policy summaries, quarterly reports and client welcome kits
  • Retail and e-commerce brands: packing inserts, gift cards, seed packets and loyalty mailers
  • Event planners and conferences: attendee badges, tickets, programs and VIP invitations

Mailing Tip: A 6x9 Can Often Mail as a Letter

Here's something many people don't know: a 6" x 9" envelope fits within USPS letter dimensions. If your mailpiece is 1/4" thick or less and weighs 3.5 oz or less, it can usually mail at the standard letter rate instead of the higher large envelope (flat) rate. Go thicker than 1/4", and it's priced as a flat. Pieces that are rigid, lumpy or uneven may also add a nonmachinable surcharge. Keep inserts flat and flexible, and you'll keep postage low.

What Fits in a 6x9 Envelope?

Anything up to about 5.5" x 8.5": booklets, mini catalogs, art booklets, photo booklets, brochures, programs, certificates, half-sheet flyers, jumbo postcards and 8.5" x 11" letters folded in half.

6x9 Envelope Printing FAQs

What size is a 6x9 envelope?

A 6x9 envelope measures 6" x 9". It holds a 5.5" x 8.5" (half-letter) booklet, brochure or card flat, without folding.

What fits in a 6x9 envelope?

Booklets, mini catalogs, brochures, programs, certificates, jumbo postcards, half-sheet flyers and 8.5" x 11" letters folded in half. Anything up to about 5.5" x 8.5" fits comfortably.

Is a 6x9 envelope a booklet or catalog envelope?

It can be either. A 6x9 that opens on the 9" side is a booklet envelope, and one that opens on the 6" side is a catalog (open-end) envelope. We offer both.

Should I choose a 6x9 or a 9x12 envelope?

Choose a 6x9 for half-letter pieces like 5.5" x 8.5" booklets and brochures. Choose a 9x12 envelope when you need to mail full 8.5" x 11" pages without folding.

Will an 8.5 x 11 sheet fit in a 6x9 envelope?

Yes, if you fold it in half to 5.5" x 8.5". To mail it flat and unfolded, you'll need a 9x12 envelope.

Can you print on the envelope flap?

Yes. You can print the front, the flap, or both. Many customers put their logo on the front and a tagline, website, QR code or social handles on the flap, so the back of the envelope works as hard as the front.

What should I print on the back flap of an envelope?

Popular choices are your logo, a short teaser ("Your new catalog is inside!"), your website or phone number, social media handles, or a QR code that links to an offer or event page.

Can 6x9 envelopes be printed edge to edge?

No. Our 6x9 envelopes are digitally printed on pre-made envelopes, so keep your artwork about 1/4" from the edges and avoid placing fine text over seams. Our templates show the safe printing areas.

Do you offer full color and 1-color printing?

Yes. Choose full color for photos, gradients and rich brand colors, or 1 color for a clean, cost-effective look.

Does a 6x9 envelope mail as a letter or a flat?

It can mail as a letter. A 6" x 9" envelope fits within USPS letter dimensions, so if it's 1/4" thick or less and weighs 3.5 oz or less, it usually mails at the letter rate. Anything thicker than 1/4" is priced as a large envelope (flat).

How many stamps do I need for a 6x9 envelope?

If your 6x9 qualifies as a letter and weighs 1 oz or less, one Forever stamp usually covers it, with additional postage for each extra ounce. If it's thicker than 1/4", it's charged large envelope rates, which cost more. Rigid or lumpy contents can add a nonmachinable surcharge.

What paper are your 6x9 envelopes printed on?

White Premium Opaque 70lb text (about 28lb bond). It's bright, smooth and opaque, and you can write on it with pen or print addresses on it with a laser or inkjet printer.

What is the minimum order for custom 6x9 envelopes?

Just 25 envelopes. Choose 25, 50, 75, 100, 250 or 500, so you can order exactly what you need instead of a big box you'll never use.

Why order a short run of printed envelopes?

Short runs are perfect for small businesses, one-time events, test mailings and seasonal campaigns. You avoid paying for and storing hundreds of extra envelopes, you can refresh your design or offer more often, and you can try a new look before committing to a larger order.

How fast can I get custom 6x9 envelopes?

Choose 1–2, 2–4 or 5–7 business day production.

Do you have 6x9 envelope templates?

Yes. Download free envelope templates for 6x9 envelopes.

What industries use custom printed 6x9 envelopes?

Custom 6x9 envelopes are popular anywhere a half-letter piece needs to arrive flat and look professional:

  • Marketing and agencies: mini catalogs, product brochures and direct mail kits
  • Nonprofits and churches: donation packets, programs and annual appeals
  • Education: admissions brochures, orientation guides and certificates
  • Healthcare and wellness: new patient welcome packets and care instructions
  • Real estate and mortgage: listing brochures and buyer guides
  • Financial and insurance: policy summaries, quarterly reports and client welcome kits
  • Retail and e-commerce: packing inserts, gift cards, seed packets and loyalty mailers
  • Events and conferences: tickets, badges, programs and VIP invitations

Custom 6×9 Envelope Printing for Booklets, Brochures & Branded Mail

Sometimes a #10 is too small and a 9×12 is more envelope than you need. That’s where the 6×9 envelope comes in. At 6″ x 9″, it holds a 5.5″ x 8.5″ booklet, brochure, card or half-folded letter perfectly flat, so your piece arrives looking the way you designed it. We print custom 6×9 envelopes with your logo, return address and brand colors, and you can add a message to the flap too. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference when someone picks your envelope out of the mailbox.

Short Runs Welcome: Order as Few as 25

Not every mailing needs 1,000 envelopes. Order custom 6×9 envelopes in quantities of 25, 50, 75, 100, 250 or 500, and pay only for what you’ll actually use. Because we print digitally, small orders still get full-color quality, your logo, flap printing and turnaround as fast as 1–2 business days. Short runs are a smart fit when you’re:

  • A small business or startup that wants branded mail without a big upfront order
  • Mailing for a single event, like a conference, fundraiser, open house or grand opening
  • Testing a campaign before rolling it out to your full list
  • Running seasonal or limited promotions that need a fresh design each time
  • Short on storage and tired of boxes of outdated envelopes in the supply closet

Front and Flap Printing: Make the Back Work as Hard as the Front

Most people see the back of an envelope right before they open it, so why leave it blank? With flap printing, you can put that space to work:

  • Your logo or brand mark on the flap for a polished, finished look
  • A tagline or teaser (“Your 2027 catalog is inside!”) that builds anticipation
  • Your website, phone number or social handles, so people can reach you even before they open it
  • A QR code that links to a landing page, offer or event registration

Print the front only, the flap only, or both. Choose full color for photos and rich brand colors, or 1 color for a clean, budget-friendly look.

Choose Your Opening: 6″ Side or 9″ Side

  • 6″ side opening (catalog / open-end style): The flap is on the short end. Booklets and thicker pieces slide straight in, which makes it a favorite for catalogs, programs and product inserts.
  • 9″ side opening (booklet style): The flap runs along the long edge. Documents go in sideways, and the large, uninterrupted front panel is ideal for a bold logo and address layout. It’s the classic choice for brochures, reports and invitations to business events.

Designing for Pre-Made Envelopes

Because we print digitally on envelopes that are already folded and glued, there are a few simple rules that keep your design looking sharp:

  • Keep a margin of about 1/4″ from all edges. Pre-made envelopes don’t print edge to edge, so leave a little breathing room around your artwork.
  • Avoid placing fine text or logos over seams. The overlapping paper on the back can make ink look uneven.
  • Keep the address area clear and light. USPS needs good contrast to read the address and barcode.

Our free 6×9 envelope templates mark the safe areas, seams and flap for both opening styles, and you can upload a print-ready PDF, AI, InDesign, Photoshop, JPG/JPEG or PNG file. Short on time or design help? Add envelope design services in the calculator, and our designers will put together a layout that matches your brand. You approve the proof, and we print and ship.
