Artwork Preparation FAQ's

What is Foil Mask File?

When you order your printed product with special finishes such as foil stamping or raised foil, please prepare, and submit an extra artwork mask file for Foil finish representation along with your CMYK artwork. This extra artwork file is called Foil Mask File.

Preparing Mask file:Ā Create a black and white pdf file with black color values of K = 100% (C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100). Black areas represent where you want the foil or raised foil finish to be applied and white means no finish will be applied.

What is a Bleed, Cut, and Safety line ?

Bleed Area:Ā It is important to know if the artwork that you have designed is supposed to be full bleed or not. If it is supposed to be full bleed, the background/artwork which is close enough to cut-line should extend 0.0625ā€ from all sides beyond the cut line to make the artwork a full bleed.

Cut Line:Ā This line determines the size of your finished product; this is where your artwork will be cut. So, make sure all-important elements such as text, logo and images are not close to this line.

Safety Line:Ā Safety line alerts the designer that All Text, Logo, and important info must be kept inside this line. Info inside the safety line will print correctly and be visible on the final product.

Note: Printer has a 1/16th of an inch shift tolerance that can occur from top, bottom, left to right. Hence, please account for 1/6th of an inch tolerance while designing your artwork.

How to design artwork for Foil Printing?
  • Always use solid color behind the Foil application. We do not recommend having any artwork or text under the foil mask since it might be visible through the foil mask.
  • Foil Coverage should be no more than 30% of the artwork, otherwise the foil will be wavy and will not look good. The only time a 50% coverage is acceptable is with patterns, thin strokes, or small shapes. Ideally, the size of the area, shape or image covered with raised foil should not exceed 1in x 1in.
  • We do not recommend having fonts smaller than 10pt on the Raised Foil Artwork. However, if you use fonts with thicker strokes or bold fonts, we do not recommend having fonts smaller than 12pt.
What print-ready file formats are accepted for uploads?

The file formats are acceptable for uploads are TIF, .TIFF, .EPS, .AI, .PSD, .JPG, .JPEG, .PNG, .PDF. We mostly recommend .pdf files.

For best quality print results, it is advisable that your files are designed in a Vector Based application such as Illustrator or Corel Draw and resolution of all images, logo is at least 300 dpi.

Postcard Coating Options

Aqueous and Satin Coatings
Aqueous gloss and satin coatings are ideal for mailed pieces, especially if you plan to use direct address printing or variable data. They give a durable finish and allow easy additional printing on the surface. Standard aqueous has a slight gloss coating and satin has a more muted shine.

UV Coatings
High-gloss UV coatings add a luster and shine to a printed piece, and can be applied to the front or both sides of the postcard. Best for applications where you want colors to pop and added durability and scratch resistance is needed. Because of the tough nature of UV coating it is difficult to add printing or writing on top of the card once the coating is applied.

Premium Postcard Paper Choices

Standard Gloss (14 pt. C2S):Ā A standard gloss paper stock available with optional UV coating on one or both sides, or matte or aqueous coating.

Premium Gloss (16 pt. C2S):Ā This premium gloss paper stock has a thicker weight, ideal for mailing and added durability. With this paper, you can select optional UV coating on one or both sides, or matte, satin or aqueous coating.

100 lb Standard Gloss Cover:Ā A shiny paper stock that is a popular choice for postcards. Sturdy in feel with solid durability, it has folding ability, and a smooth milled finish.

Standard Uncoated (14 pt. Uncoated):Ā This paper stock is slightly lighter than the standard gloss paper and gives you a textured, natural and upscale feel. This paper stock also allows you to write on your print with pens, pencils, and markers.

Thick Gloss (18 pt. C1S):Ā This is an ultra thick paper stock for use in your postcard. It makes for an impressive, tough to miss premium mailer or hand-out.

Uncoated Linen (100 lb. Cover):Ā is a thick, durable stock made with 30% recycled material. It enhances the appearance of your postcard with its unique feel and texture, and lends a classic look.
